Introducing the New ALiEMU Capsules Series

Posted by Bryan D. Hayes, PharmD, DABAT, FAACT, FASHP on

We are excited and proud to introduce a new series as part of the recently announced ALiEMU: Capsules: Practical Pharmacology for the EM Practitioner.

The Capsules series’ primary focus is bringing Emergency Medicine pharmacology education to the bedside. Our expert team distills complex pharmacology principles into easy-to-apply concepts. It’s our version of what-you-need-to-know as an EM practitioner. We hope you enjoy it.

Purpose

The Capsules series was conceived in response to a perceived deficiency of emergency medicine pharmacology information in Free Open Access Meducation (FOAM) resources.

Additionally, in 2012 The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and The American Board of Emergency (ABEM) created 23 milestones for which all EM residents are evaluated during their residency. The Pharmacotherapy milestone is #5.

It got me thinking: What if we created an online curriculum focused on practical pharmacology for the EM practitioner that also incorporated evaluations for each level of the milestone?

Design

Capsules will be the first series to fully take advantage of our new Learning Management System (or LMS). A new module will be published each month starting July 2015. We have more than 25 topics planned over the next few years.

The Capsules series will be composed of separate course modules. Each course module will be broken into multiple lessons which can further be separated into topics. A quiz will be provided at the end of each lesson or topic to reinforce key learning points. All modules are written by two pharmacist team members and then peer-reviewed by a separate pharmacist and physician. In addition, the quizzes will be structured with questions assessing levels 1-4 of the ACGME EM milestones. We are hopeful they may be adapted by EM residency programs as an evaluation method.

By breaking down modules into smaller chunks, we allow learners to save their progress and learn on their own time. We also built this platform to be “mobile first” so that learners have a great experience on any device.
