The current Annals of Emergency Medicine journal club series
Currently this is an already great series, which aims to “improve the critical appraisal skills of emergency physicians and other interested readers through a guided critique” of selected articles from the journal. Those articles are made open-access and free to the public for the sake of encouraging discussion. The section editors are Dr. Tyler Barrett and Dr. David Schriger. Many residency programs already use the framework of questions to guide their journal club discussions. For each set of journal club questions, Dr. Barrett and Schriger also publish a follow-up paper several months later detailing the expert answers to the questions.
The ALiEM-Annals of EM Global Journal Club concept
In an attempt to create a more dynamic and engaged discussion for this journal club series, we will be hosting a one-week global journal club on the blog and Twitter based on 5 questions from their journal club series. Anyone can comment, whether you are a medical student, resident, or a practicing medical provider. This discussion will be facilitated by members of the ALiEM blog and Annals of EM editorial team.
What journal article are we discussing?
Just published in this month’s Annals of EM, the article is Emergency Department Computed Tomography Utilization in the United States and Canada. [Download free PDF]
The Global Journal Club schedule
- Monday, November 18, 2013: The blog will officially post the 5 journal club questions to be discussed. Simultaneously these same 5 questions will be posted to Twitter to generate a parallel discussion using the hashtag #ALiEMJC . Facilitated discussions will be held over a 7 day period. Recruit your friends and colleagues to participate!
- Sunday, November 24, 2013 (5 pm EST): Comments from the blog and Twitter will be curated and qualitatively analyzed. We may be quoting a few GREAT comments from the discussions and incorporating them into the published Annals of EM Journal Club Expert Answers paper, which will now also include a curated global community summary. There could be a quote from YOU!
Importance of your participation
This is a proof-of-concept collaborative project between our two organizations, ALiEM and the Annals of EM. We are extremely appreciative that the premiere journal in Emergency Medicine would be willing to innovate and collaborate with us in this social media arena. If this pilot project is successful, it may lay the groundwork for more continued collaborations. Please help us by participating in the blog comments section and/or Twitter on Monday!
Spread the word. Let’s show the power of a robust crowdsourced discussion.
We are trying to create a new model of networked scholarship and accelerated knowledge translation!
