Objectives:

  1. The learner will understand the history of emergency medicine and the challenges our specialty faced becoming recognized in the house of medicine.
  2. The learner will understand the evolution of emergency care shaped by EMTALA and changing reimbursement methods that has led to the growth of EM residency training programs, increased consolidation in healthcare, change in EM workforce with non-physician providers, and contraction of the job market.
  3. The learner will see potential solutions to address workforce concerns including changes to EM accreditation standards, advocacy efforts on physician-led teams and scope of practice, expansion of quality care to all communities, and strategies to increase demand and use of our skills outside of hospital based emergency departments.
