The MED-TAC Intl. Decompression Needle is a rugged needle/catheter combo used for the immediate management of a tension pneumothorax.  The high-quality stainless-steel needle measures an optimal 3.25" and has a 14-gauge measurement. The unit comes securely encased in an easy-open protective tube with a textured twist top and handy clip.

The North American Rescue SPEAR (Simplified Pneumothorax Emergency Air Release) Device is the latest innovation in needle decompression technology. The versatile device has been designed and developed based directly on science, user feedback, and known gaps in the management of tension pneumothorax. Each design feature has been carefully crafted to enhance the user experience and increase the probability of success when a life is on the line. The convenient device allows either lateral decompression or traditional anterior needle thoracostomy. The SPEAR device features a sharper needle point, reducing the amount of force required to insert the needle, as well as a spin-lock features that helps prevent premature separation between the needle and catheter. To help with confirmation of depth and success, the device has centimeter depth markings and a detachable, low pressure one-way check valve that creates an audible whistle as air rushes through. The one-way valve can be removed from the needle and either reapplied to the catheter or left off entirely, according to local protocols. Upon removal of the needle, the remaining catheter is a rigid, kink-resistant material with a soft tip to lessen the impact on possible tissue contact. Also, the catheter features 3 fenestrations (holes) along the length to aid in air flow. The latest TCCC Guidelines have allowed for a 10 Ga Needle in addition to the traditional 14 Ga product. The larger lumen increases the area of flow by more than two and a half times. The additional length of the SPEAR device (total catheter length: 3.75 in.) should allow the user to reach and maintain access to the pleural space in a vast majority of the population. This video will show the LEFT ANTERIOR insertion site, but the SPEAR can be placed in Anterior and Lateral sites bilaterally.

The Lightning X Vented Chest Seal is an occlusive dressing designed to treat open chest wounds. Injuries to the chest that result in open chest wounds may lead to tension pneumothorax, the second leading cause of preventable death on the battlefield. Chest Seal is made with a medical-grade hydrogel adhesive strong enough to adhere to skin that is exposed to blood, sweat, hair, sand or water.  With the entire package measuring only 6″ x 4″, it’s configured to fit in IFAKs and small personal trauma kits. The 4 vent design maximizes venting and ensures proper chest seal function in the event of an obstruction. The Russell Chest Seal® is a hydrogel-based dressing with an integral low-profile valve. Its purpose is to cover penetrating chest wounds to allow air to escape from the pleural cavity without being drawn back in. The aim is to minimize lung collapse associated with this injury and to facilitate lung re-inflation. The base material of the Russell Chest Seal® is the same hydrogel material used in our Nightingale™ dressing which makes an excellent airtight and secure seal. It has been thoroughly tested and proven on military operations and adheres effectively to the sweaty and hairy skin. It will remain adhered over many hours and is comfortable for the patient in prolonged use. Another component that makes the Russell Chest Seal® unique is its valve mechanism. It is constructed from a thin but tough material which makes it very compliant. This allows it to open and close with very small changes in pressure (2O). The valve is quite transparent so the dressing can be positioned accurately over the wound. A large base aperture gives some latitude for inaccurate placement in high-stress environments. Four peripheral apertures are large enough (36Fr) to allow blood to escape if necessary without blocking the valve. The four apertures provide substantial redundancy: if up to three of the four holes become obstructed the valve will still remain fully operational. The VT Select is a manual resuscitator with a tactile feedback system. It is recommended by the AHA to deliver 10 BPM of 500-600mL to a standard adult. When activated, the valve restricts the refill of the bag to ~4 seconds. This provides your patient ~10 BPM, helping to eliminate hyperventilation of the patient. The valve comes pre-activated so the user can begin using the bag immediately once opened. When the valve is activated, press your thumb and three fingers simultaneously together utilizing the finger ridges to deliver approximately 500-600mL to the patient. Additionally, the BVM is smaller (1200mL) than most adult bags on the market. This helps to reduce the risk of hyperinflation or barotrauma.  When using the VT Select BVM, the delivered volume range for a 1 handed technique is 530mL and 690mL for a 2-handed technique. The VT Select BVM hand strap is designed to be low profile, so a user can grip around the strap if desired.
