New Horizons

Do you like the ALiEM Book Club?  Well we like you too!…  so much so that we want YOU to join in on the next book discussion! We are taking the blog and book club to another level by pairing up with Dr. Teresa Chan (@TChanMD), an academic emergentologist from Canada. We are breaking the barriers of the internet and laying the foundation for a real-time, interactive discussion utilizing social media.

An Invitation

In three weeks, on August 9, 2013, we will be posting our review of Dr. Atul Gawande’s (@Atul_Gawande) famous book – The Checklist Manifesto. When we post, we would love for you to posts your thoughts and commentary on the book.

How to Get Involved

Please read the book, or skim it if you are short on time. On August 9th, we will release our review and open the commentary section. This will be your opportunity to engage in the discussion and interact with your peers nationally and internationally. We are looking for your comments, theories, and reflections to the book and to the commentary by your peers.

Questions to Start You Thinking

  1. What are the advantages and barriers to implementing checklists in your ED and why?
  2. Some EM researchers worry that checklist cause ‘cognitive forcing’. Thoughts?
  3. Are there times when checklists can contribute to patient morbidity or mortality?

TED talk

Here is a brief synopsis of the concept of checklists in Medicine by Dr. Atul Gawande himself at a recent TED talk session:

Our Mission

We hope to use social media to maximize interactivity of the book club. Although we can not actually sit down and have intellectual discussions of publications together, we can still benefit and learn from each other. Please share any thoughts, suggestions, or commentary . We are looking forward to August 9th and hope you are as well!
