ALiEMU School Doors Open – Featuring the CAPSULES Series

Our virtual school doors are open starting today to ALiEM University (ALiEMU), which can best be thought of as our open-access, on-demand, online school of e-courses for anyone practicing Emergency Medicine worldwide. This ambitious venture was made possible by a tremendous team, but primarily led by Chris Gaafary, MD (@CGaafary), ALiEMU’s Chief of Design and Development and an EM chief resident in his free time at the University of Tennessee. Today we are incredibly excited to launch our inaugural longitudinal e-course the ALiEM Capsules Series: A Practical Pharmacology for the EM Practitioner, created and led by Bryan Hayes, PharmD, FAACT (@PharmERToxGuy).

 ALiEM Capsules Series

The Capsules series, which was introduced a few weeks ago by Bryan, essentially is an online e-curriculum of high-quality, practical, and very current information about practical pharmacology for the EM practitioner. Each month a new course module will be released, which have lessons to read about and brief quizzes to complete. With each step, your personal dashboard will keep track of what you have completed.

The first module is on “Pharmacology of Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock”, which was co-authored by Jill Logan, PharmD, BCPS (@EMPharm) and Adam Spaulding, PharmD, BCPS (@PharmERAtom) and reviewed by Craig Cocchio, PharmD, BCPS (@iEMPharmD) and Michael Winters, MD, FAAEM (@CritCareGuys)

Capsules First Course How do I join?

Individualized Interactive Instruction (III) Conference Credit

For U.S. EM residency programs interested in using the Capsules series for III conference credit as a form of asynchronous learning, a member of the program’s leadership needs to register a new account with us as well. Provide us some basic information on our Residency Sign Up page. We will then provide Educator Dashboard access to view the progress of all the learners at one’s program.

Can I use this on my mobile device?

Of course! Chris designed the entire site with a “mobile first” design approach. Try it out. We know that everyone is busy, and any learning on the go is done in little chunks at a time.

So mobile responsiveness was a MUST for us.

Next Steps

Although we are incredibly proud and thrilled about this first Capsules course module, we always think we can do better. Here are a just a few exciting things we have in store for the future:

  • Labeling of content and quizzes to match ACGME milestones
  • Step-by-step video tutorials showing you more the nuances and features of ALiEMU
  • Addition of the ALiEM AIR Series as the second e-course
  • Digital badges and leader boards
  • Direct messaging with others who are also online in the e-courses
