As educational content, which was traditionally published in the form of textbooks, get repurposed into blog posts, podcasts, and videos, iBooks have been a bit slower to take hold. They can replace print textbooks, if done from a thoughtful design-based approach such as by Drs. Matthew Dawson and Mike Mallin in their Introduction to EM Ultrasound (volume 1 and 2) iBooks. Here’s another iBook entitled “EM Clinical Decision Rules” involving pulmonary embolism (PE) and minor head trauma by Drs. Shannon McNamara, Christine Knettel, and David Wald.
This iBook is a great tutorial for senior medical students and junior residents to guide through diagnostic and treatment decision making dilemmas regarding PE and head trauma, as framed by sample cases. High-quality radiograph and ECG images supplement the cases to give it a more real-world feel. The multimedia galleries of CT images are a nice touch, allowing readers to swipe through a series in a viewfinder. Intermittent multiple-choice questions are embedded to make sure that you are on the right track.
Overall, this iBook is not only a useful digital reference of students and junior residents, but also a quality example of what is possible with iBooks for educators.
