ALiEM Awards 2017: Congratulations to Our Winners!

Derek Monette, MD |

Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 ALiEM Awards! We reviewed some truly incredible submissions in all 3 categories – all were high caliber! Ultimately, we felt that the winners best represent the true spirit of medical education and digital innovation.

Thanks to all who continue to contribute to medical education! We are inspired by each of you.

Most Innovative Blog or Podcast

Winner: CanadiEM.org

About: CanadiEM.org, initially launched as “BoringEM” in 2013 by Dr. Brent Thoma, has transformed over the past 3 years into an online community that develops high-quality, freely accessible educational resources. From its podcast series (CRACKCast) to its innovative Infographics, this blog is moving the #FOAMed needle and providing EM providers in and outside of Canada with exceptional education.

Best Use of Technology To Enhance Medical Education

Winner: University of British Columbia Radiology Teaching App

About: This incredibly innovative and user-friendly mobile app (free for download both at iOS and Android) was developed in 2016 to improve medical student radiology instruction. Using validated teaching methodologies, the app now includes over 500 anatomy-based questions featuring multiple types of imaging modalities and over 60 clinical cases.

Most Innovative Educator

Winner: Dr. Dimitri Papanagnou (@dimitripapa)

About: Dr. Papanagnou is Assistant Dean for Faculty Development, Vice Chair of Education, and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Jefferson University. His programming and teaching focuses on patient safety and quality, simulation, and interprofessional education. He was recently awarded a $1.2 million AHRQ grant as a co-investigator of a project that will leverage computerized modules, simulation, and deliberate practice to help EM residents develop skills to communicate diagnostic uncertainty to patients during transitions in care.
