In this new installment in the “How I Work Smarter” series, we really are going global. We first started in the United States, then Australia, and now the United Kingdom. Today we feature Dr. Damian Roland (@damian_roland), who blogs at The Rolobot Rambles. Damian was kind enough to provide his great tips, and it is with great pleasure that I share his responses to the questions in this series.
- Name: Dr. Damian Roland

- One word that best describes how you work: Vibrantly

What’s your office workspace setup like?
I wish my ‘office’ was just my computer, however the physical space I occupy at work often consists of a desktop computer, a Mac Air, a cacophony of cables, intermittent frustration at lack of wifi, and (at regular intervals) a cup of coffee. Also one of my rules for when I am not on a clinical shift is for a coffee and cake break at 11 am.
What’s your best time-saving tip in the office or home?
Turning off e-mail when trying to complete a task. When I actually do this it definitely saves me time…
What’s your best time-saving tip regarding email management?
For all e-mails, I decide whether I can respond within 48 hours or not. If I can’t, I tend to e-mail saying a response will be delayed and if you don’t hear from me please e-mail back. If I never get to it and I don’t hear back, then it can’t have been that important…
What’s your best time-saving tip in the ED?
I write (we are still paper based) as I clerk. The BNF app (the British National Formulary) is also awesome.
ED charting: Macros or no macros?
Not sure I can answer as we are still paper-based, but I spend a lot of time trying to create work-arounds in our department!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about work, life, or being efficient?
Ask yourself: Are you putting lots of passion into your work? Do you have the same energy with your home life? If not – why not!?
Is there anything else you’d like to add that might be interesting to readers?
If you’ve read something that has touched you or made a difference to what you do, have you let the person who wrote it know?
Who would you love for us to track down to answer these same questions?
- Simon Carley
- Joe Lex
- Chris Nickson
