How competitive was emergency medicine (EM), especially given the transition period of having a single-accreditation system? Because it seems that EM remains modestly competitive, how many programs should one apply to and interview at? The below table outlines the data trends for 2011-2019.

Some of the numbers mentioned in the podcast were very slightly off, but the table above and general discussion on trends remains correct. The bottom line also remains the same in that the numbers are relatively unchanged from 2018, and slight changes can be partly explained by the single-accreditation system process this year. The take home point? Stop the madness of over-applying to too many programs!
