Why is the SAM IO Stabilizer important after IO placement?

The SAM IO Stabilizer secures the IO catheter hub against the skin after needle placement, preventing catheter dislodgement during patient movement, transport, and treatment. An unsecured IO catheter can shift within the bone cavity, causing extravasation, IO site damage, or complete loss of access. In tactical and prehospital settings where patients are moved and repositioned frequently, stabilization is a critical final step in the IO placement procedure before infusion begins.

Is the SAM IO Stabilizer single-use?

Yes. The SAM IO Driver Stabilizer (IO740-1P-EN / IO740-5P-EN) is a single-patient-use device. A new stabilizer should be applied for each IO access event. Used stabilizers should be disposed of appropriately after the IO catheter is removed.

Can I use tape instead of the SAM IO Stabilizer?

While some providers improvise IO catheter securement with medical tape in austere conditions, the SAM IO Stabilizer is purpose-engineered to fit the specific hub geometry of SAM IO needle assemblies, providing more reliable retention than improvised tape. In wet, dirty, or bloody field conditions, tape adhesion often fails. The Stabilizer is specifically designed for field durability and should be used whenever available.

Is the Stabilizer included with the SAM IO Driver?

The full SAM IO Intraosseous Access System kit includes one Stabilizer. However, when purchasing the SAM IO Driver or needles individually, the Stabilizer is available separately as a single unit (MEDTAC1059) or in a 5-pack (MEDTAC1060). Units maintaining SAM IO kits should ensure an adequate supply of Stabilizers alongside their needle inventory.

When in the IO placement sequence is the Stabilizer applied?

The SAM IO Stabilizer is applied after successful IO needle placement and stylet removal — specifically, after the driver needle has entered the medullary cavity, the stylet has been withdrawn from the catheter, and the Luer-lock port has been exposed. The Stabilizer should be applied before connecting the extension set (via the SAM IO Adaptor) and before beginning aspiration, flushing, or infusion, to ensure the catheter is secured prior to any manipulation of the access line.
