Call 9-1-1 immediately. Tell the dispatcher the location, number of injured, and nature of the bleeding. Bystander intervention starts while you wait for EMS.
Look for life-threatening bleeding. Check the extremities, torso, and junctional areas (groin, armpit, neck). Remove or cut clothing to find the source.
Apply direct pressure with hands, then pack with gauze and maintain pressure. If bleeding is on a limb and uncontrolled, apply a tourniquet high and tight.
Basic kits include tourniquet, gauze, and pressure dressing -- the minimum to stop life-threatening limb bleeding. Intermediate adds chest seals and hemostatic agents. Advanced includes airway management and decompression capabilities. Public access stations contain multiple individually-sealed kits in a wall-mounted cabinet for rapid deployment across large facilities.
