Can the Go IO Start Kit be used with any IO device, or only the NIO?
The Go IO Start Kit is designed and sized specifically for the NIO® Intraosseous Device (Adult and Pediatric) by PerSys Medical / Safeguard Medical. The NIO Fixation Securement Dressing, NeedleVISE Sharps Block, and 90° extension set connector are dimensioned for NIO hub geometry. Compatibility with other IO devices (EZ-IO, FASTx, FAST1) is not guaranteed.
What is the NeedleVISE Sharps Safety Block?
The NeedleVISE is a passive sharps containment block included in the Go IO kit for safe disposal of the NIO device after removal from the patient. After NIO removal, the exposed needle represents a needlestick hazard to providers and bystanders. The NeedleVISE accepts the needle tip and mechanically secures it, enabling safe disposal in a sharps container without direct needle contact.
Why does the extension set use a 90° connector?
The NIO hub sits close to the bone surface with limited vertical clearance. A standard straight connector creates mechanical leverage on the IO hub that can dislodge or angulate the needle. The 90° connector routes the IV tubing parallel to the skin surface, eliminating this leverage effect and providing a more secure, low-profile connection point for IV administration sets and pressure bags.
Is the patient bracelet in the Go IO kit a standard medical bracelet?
The patient bracelet serves as a field documentation device to label the IO access site with relevant information (device type, insertion time, insertion site). This supports continuity of care during CASEVAC/MEDEVAC — receiving providers at higher echelons can quickly identify the presence and location of IO access without removing dressings. Proper IO documentation also triggers the 24-hour IO dwell time clock.
Should the Go IO kit be purchased alongside every NIO device?
Yes. Safeguard Medical recommends the Go IO Start Kit with every NIO insertion. The NIO device alone achieves IO access but does not provide the extension set, stopcock, or securement dressing needed to use that access effectively for fluid resuscitation or medication administration. Stocking NIO devices without Go IO kits creates a clinical gap. For training and operational readiness, maintain a 1:1 ratio of Go IO kits to NIO devices.
Is the Go IO Start Kit compatible with the NIO Infant?
The Go IO Start Kit (SKU GO IO) is designed for the NIO Adult™ and NIO Pediatric™. The NIO Infant (NIO-I) is packaged with its own fixation dressing and uses a different hub geometry. Safeguard Medical recommends verifying compatibility with the NIO Infant IFU before pairing with the Go IO kit.
What is the maximum dwell time for an IO line established with the Go IO Start Kit?
The maximum recommended IO dwell time is 24 hours, consistent with standard prehospital IO access protocols. The patient bracelet included in the Go IO Start Kit is designed to document insertion time — a critical field record that initiates the 24-hour IO dwell time clock and supports continuity of care at higher echelons.
How many Go IO Start Kits should be stocked per NIO device?
Safeguard Medical recommends a 1:1 ratio of Go IO Start Kits to NIO devices for training and operational readiness. Each NIO insertion requires one Go IO kit to establish a fully functional, secured IO line. Stocking NIO devices without Go IO kits leaves providers without the post-insertion tools needed for fluid resuscitation and medication delivery.
