What is an aneroid sphygmomanometer and how does it differ from a digital BP cuff?

An aneroid sphygmomanometer is a manual blood pressure cuff with a mechanical gauge (aneroid dial) that requires a stethoscope and trained auscultation to interpret Korotkoff sounds. A digital (automatic) BP cuff inflates/deflates automatically and uses oscillometric technology to calculate BP without a stethoscope. Aneroid is the clinical reference standard; digital is more accessible for untrained users.

Does the manual aneroid sphygmomanometer require batteries?

No. The aneroid sphygmomanometer is a fully mechanical instrument requiring no batteries or power source. The gauge uses a sealed aneroid capsule that deflects in response to pressure changes, driving the needle on the calibrated numeric dial. This makes it reliable in any environment, at any temperature, and without power infrastructure.

What is the blood pressure target in prehospital trauma management?
