A 3.53 lb thigh-segment task trainer hand-cast in prosthetic-grade platinum silicone, carrying an entry-and-exit gunshot wound with a large internal cavity, a superficial deep oval abrasion, internally attached bleeding tubes and a palpable bone structure inside the wound. The bone is the point: it gives a trainee the tactile endpoint that tells them the packing has reached the base of the cavity. Every trainer ships complete with its own hand-operated blood pump and a canvas carry holdall, so it runs wet out of the box. Three skin tones.

VIEW ▾Running It Wet — everything the bleeding system needs

The pump that ships with the trainer is the complete bleeding system — there is nothing further to buy from us or anyone else to make the wounds bleed
Fill the pump bottle with diluted blood concentrate, pressurize it with no more than ten strokes of the plunger, then press the trigger to bleed the wound
Correct packing and sustained pressure stop the flow — that is the feedback the station exists to give
Blood concentrate is supplied in a 500 ml bottle and dilutes with water up to four times its own volume, so one bottle makes roughly 2.5 litres of simulated blood. It is skin-safe and washes off skin and silicone
Use the manufacturer's own simulation blood range. The manufacturer states the trainer is compatible with its own SIMBODIES blood products and cautions that third-party blood products may affect the silicone.
Plan the station around a hard floor or a tarpaulin: diluted concentrate washes off skin, but it can stain light-coloured fabric, carpet and soft furnishings
Flush the lines with clean water after every session, until the water runs clear

The hand-operated blood pump and the carry holdall ship with every trainer and are already in the price. The only consumable you supply is the blood concentrate, diluted with tap water. No separate reservoir, powered pump, compressor or tubing kit is required. Each unit is handmade, so slight dimensional variation from catalog images is inherent to the process.

Use the bone. The value of this trainer over a foam block is that a student can feel where the bottom of the cavity is, and instructors should coach to that endpoint rather than to how much gauze went in. Because the trainer is silicone and reusable, budget for cleaning time between iterations and for the consumable gauze the class will actually burn through — neither of those is included here, though the pump that makes the wound bleed is.

While tourniquets are the primary CoTCCC-recommended intervention for proximal leg hemorrhage, correct wound packing technique is critical as a backup when tourniquet effectiveness is incomplete, and for mid-thigh wounds where packing depth and pressure are the determining factors in hemostasis.

Does the Simbodies Thigh Trainer allow packing-to-the-bone technique practice?

Yes. The trainer has a palpable internal femur structure that can be felt through the wound cavity walls. CoTCCC wound packing technique requires gauze to be packed deeply to the base of the wound cavity — ideally until the packer feels the underlying bone — to ensure hemostatic agents contact the bleeding vessel. The Simbodies Thigh Trainer provides this tactile bone endpoint, making it one of the few task trainers that authentically teaches the complete packing-to-the-bone technique.

How does the Thigh Wound Packing Trainer differ from the Shoulder Wound Packing Trainer?

Both trainers are built from the same Prosthetic Grade Platinum Silicone with internal bleeding tubes and three wound sites. The key anatomical differences are: the Thigh Trainer has a palpable bone structure (femur analog) that the Shoulder Trainer does not, reflecting the clinical importance of packing-to-the-bone technique in thigh wounds.
