VIEW ▾What This Is Not — read before ordering

Not a purpose-built tactical decompression needle. The catheters here are standard IV catheters. Devices designed for the task — the NAR ARS, SPEAR, Dart and Russell PneumoFix — have flash chambers, clip-on cases and fenestrated catheters that this kit does not.
Not a CoTCCC-listed device. The legacy page asserted that the catheter "meets CoTCCC-recommended needle decompression specification"; that claim is not carried here. The ARS needle is the CoTCCC-recommended decompression device, and this is not it.
Not a chest tube or thoracostomy set. There is no chest tube, trocar, scalpel or drainage system in this box.
Not a chest seal. Occlusion of an open chest wound needs a separate dressing.
Not a first-responder item. Needle decompression is an invasive provider-level procedure performed under scope of practice, credentialing and local protocol.

Rather than relying solely on passive air venting, this system allows providers to actively aspirate air or fluid through the stopcock assembly — enabling more controlled decompression and the ability to confirm successful pleural entry by aspirating air. The extension tubing also creates distance between the decompression site and the stopcock, facilitating better procedural access.

How does the Curaplex kit differ from a standalone needle decompression device?

A standalone decompression needle (such as the NAR ARS® or SPEAR®) is a single-component device optimized for immediate prehospital use — grab, deploy, decompress. The Curaplex kit is a comprehensive procedural set that also provides skin prep, sterile field creation, aspiration capability, wound management, and gloves — better suited for structured EMS, hospital, or tactical environments where a more complete setup is feasible. How many decompression attempts can one Curaplex kit support?

The Curaplex kit includes four 14 Ga. IV catheter needles, allowing up to four separate decompression attempts from a single kit. This supports the TCCC protocol of attempting a second NDC at the alternate site if the first is unsuccessful, supports bilateral decompression in polytrauma patients, and provides redundancy in mass casualty scenarios where multiple patients may require intervention. Two pairs of gloves also support bilateral or multi-provider procedures.

What antiseptic preparation is included in the Curaplex kit?

The kit includes four PVP (povidone-iodine) swabsticks for antiseptic skin preparation. Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that provides rapid bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses — making it appropriate for emergency procedural skin prep when time is limited. For protocols requiring chlorhexidine-based prep (such as Chloraprep®), providers should supplement with their preferred antiseptic; the NAR Simple Thoracostomy Kit uses Chloraprep® swabsticks as an alternative.
