The reason to buy four sealed kits rather than one larger kit: in a multi-casualty event the casualties are rarely together, and a single large kit can only be in one place. Four self-contained kits can be carried by four people to four casualties, and each vacuum seal shows the kit is unopened at the moment it is grabbed. Restock a kit the day its seal is broken.

How the contents work together. Life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg gets the C-A-T®: high and tight over clothing when the bleeding source cannot be seen or the scene is not safe, otherwise on bare skin 2–3 in. above the wound, never across a joint. Write the time on the casualty with the marker and leave the tourniquet on for EMS. A deep wound in the groin, armpit or neck, or one a tourniquet cannot control, is packed tight with the gauze and held with firm pressure for at least 10 minutes and until the bleeding stops; the emergency bandage then goes over the packing to keep the pressure on. The chest seals cover an open wound of the chest — never pack the chest or abdomen. For a child 2 years old or younger, use direct pressure or a pressure wrap.
