A 28 Fr NPA has an outer diameter of approximately 9.3 mm and a length of approximately 117 mm — sized to establish a patent nasopharyngeal passage without excessive force or trauma. Is the Lightning X NPA safe for patients who are still awake?

Yes. This is a key advantage of NPAs over oropharyngeal airways (OPAs). Because the NPA is inserted through the nose rather than the mouth, it bypasses the gag-sensitive oral pharynx. Semi-conscious and conscious patients with partial airway obstruction — such as those with reduced muscle tone, traumatic brain injury, or altered consciousness — can receive an NPA without triggering the severe gag response that would occur with an OPA.
