Slishman Traction Splint

A femur traction splint that pulls from the hip rather than the foot. Telescoping 6061 aluminium poles push against a distal strap instead of anchoring at the ankle, so the splint never extends past the patient's foot — which is what lets it into an aircraft, a vehicle or a litter that a Sager, Hare or Thomas splint will not fit. Under 18 oz, packs to 22 in. × 3 in. × 3 in., one size from small pediatric to large adult.

Femur fracture with traction indicated is a specific finding, not a default; identifying it is a provider skill and the splint does not make that judgement for you. Traction splinting is an EMT- and paramedic-scope skill in most systems, but scope is set by your state, your service and your medical director — not by a product page. Train on the proximal-traction mechanism specifically before you carry it: Providers taught on Sager or Hare splints will reach for the foot, and this device does not work that way. Reassess distal circulation, sensation and motor function after application and at intervals your protocol defines.

Why does the Slishman Traction Splint not extend beyond the patient's foot?

The STS uses a proximal traction mechanism: the groin strap anchors at the patient's hip, and telescoping poles extend toward the ankle creating a pushing force against the distal ankle strap. Unlike traditional traction splints that pull from the foot and extend significantly past it, the STS remains anatomically contained between the patient's hip and ankle — fitting safely in helicopters, ambulances, and tactical transport platforms.

Can the Slishman Traction Splint be used with lower leg injuries or foot amputations?

Yes — and this is a major clinical advantage. Traditional traction splints require intact lower leg anatomy for distal anchor placement. The STS distal strap can be positioned proximal to the ankle or calf, allowing traction to still be applied to a femur fracture even when the lower leg or foot is injured or amputated. The lower leg remains accessible for additional treatment.

How long does it take to apply the Slishman Traction Splint?

The STS is designed for application in under 60 seconds with minimal training. The application process uses a spring-button for coarse positioning of the telescoping poles and a cord-pull with V-notch lock for fine traction adjustment. No assembly of separate poles or complicated mechanisms is required — the device deploys as a single connected unit.

Does one Slishman Traction Splint fit both adults and pediatric patients?

Yes. The STS is designed to accommodate patients from small children to large adults in a single device. The telescoping poles adjust across the full range of femur lengths, eliminating the need to carry separate adult and pediatric traction splints and reducing the kit weight and volume burden on the provider.

Can traction be adjusted during patient transport with the Slishman Splint?

Yes. Because the traction adjustment mechanism is located at the patient's hip rather than at the foot, it remains accessible to the care provider during ambulance or helicopter transport. Providers can easily increase or decrease traction as needed without removing the patient from the splint or reaching across the patient to access the distal end.
