What is the difference between 'NIJ certified' and 'independently tested to NIJ standards'?

NIJ certification (formal) means the product has passed the NIJ's Voluntary Product Certification Program — production samples were tested at an NIJ-recognized laboratory, the product appears on the NIJ Compliant Products List (CPL), and ongoing surveillance testing of production samples is required to maintain certification. 'Independently tested' means the manufacturer had samples tested at a lab against NIJ test protocols but did not undergo the formal NIJ certification program — there is no CPL listing and no ongoing production surveillance. The BNIJPC1012 is formally NIJ-certified and CPL-listed.

Does NIJ Level III protect against M855 Green Tip (5.56mm steel core)?

No — NIJ Level III certification tests against 7.62×51mm NATO M80 FMJ ball at 2,780 fps. M855 Green Tip (5.56mm, 62 gr with steel penetrator) is NOT required for Level III certification. Many UHMWPE Level III plates — including this VISM NIJ Certified plate — may not reliably stop M855 due to the steel penetrator core. If M855 defeat is required, a Level III+ SRT plate (specifically tested against M855) or a Level IV plate should be selected.

How do I verify the NIJ certification status of this plate?
