Wrapping a casualty is within anyone's scope — this is one of the few interventions in a trauma kit that requires no credential at all, and it is among the most commonly omitted. Preventing further heat loss starts as soon as life-threatening bleeding and airway or breathing problems are managed, and it is worth doing on any significant trauma patient regardless of ambient temperature. What this blanket does not do is rewarm anybody: it is passive insulation that slows loss. Active rewarming, warmed fluids and core temperature management are separate capabilities with their own equipment, training and protocol.

Is the Blizzard IFAK Blanket included in any Safeguard Medical kits?

When should the Blizzard IFAK Blanket be applied in the MARCH protocol?

The Blizzard IFAK Blanket addresses the H step of MARCH — Hypothermia/Head. In combat casualty care, preventing hypothermia is critical because the trauma triad of death (hypothermia, acidosis, coagulopathy) is self-reinforcing: hypothermia worsens coagulopathy, which worsens hemorrhage. Apply early — as soon as life-threatening hemorrhage and airway/respiratory interventions are completed — to reduce the onset of traumatic hypothermia in any patient who is exposed, wet, or in cold conditions.
