How does the FAST1 IO system differ from tibial IO devices like the EZ-IO?

The FAST1 uses the sternum (manubrium) as the access site rather than the tibia, humerus, or other peripheral bones. This offers several tactical advantages: the sternal site is accessible in any patient position, is unaffected by extremity injuries, and requires manual insertion with no drill or power source. The EZ-IO uses a battery-powered drill and is typically placed in the tibia or humerus. The FAST1's Target Patch provides site-specific placement guidance that reduces operator variability without requiring the electric drill infrastructure.

What flow rates are achievable through the FAST1?

The FAST1 achieves gravity drip flow rates of up to 80 mL/min — comparable to a large-bore peripheral IV. Under pressure infusion (pressure bag or manual pressure), rates are significantly higher. This makes the FAST1 capable of delivering the rapid fluid and whole blood volumes required for effective hemorrhagic shock resuscitation. Flow rates through IO routes, including the sternal access, approach central venous catheter performance and far exceed what is achievable with a poorly perfused peripheral line in a shocked patient.

Can the FAST1 be used while CPR is in progress?

Yes. The FAST1 can be effectively used during ongoing CPR without interruption of compressions. The sternal access site is located on the manubrium — the upper portion of the sternum — above the typical CPR compression zone (lower sternum and xiphoid). This anatomical separation allows simultaneous IO access and CPR, a critical capability in cardiac arrest resuscitation where every second of chest compression interruption worsens outcomes.

What is the Target Patch and how does it improve accuracy?

The Target Patch is a self-adhesive placement guide that is applied to the patient's manubrium (upper sternum). It marks the correct insertion point and provides tactile and visual guidance for precise needle placement. Under adverse conditions — poor lighting, patient movement, rescuer stress, degraded fine motor control — the Target Patch maintains insertion accuracy that would otherwise require extensive training. It is designed specifically for use in the austere and combat environments where the FAST1 is most valuable.

What age and patient restrictions apply to the FAST1?

The FAST1 is indicated for patients aged 12 years and over. This age restriction reflects sternal bone development requirements — the manubrium must have sufficient bone density and structure to support IO access. Pediatric patients under 12 typically lack the required sternal development. There is no upper age restriction. The device is compatible with standard IV fluids and medications delivered through IO routes, as well as blood products including whole blood and packed red blood cells.
