Dimensions, material, sterility and latex status are as published by MED-TAC International. One legacy claim has not been carried across: That this gauze is "produced to performance specifications comparable to leading branded equivalents". No comparative testing, standard or specification was cited to support it, and an unsupported equivalence claim on a wound-contact product is not something to publish. The width is the useful specification here — 4 in. Is the width most tactical medicine is built around, and it fits both an IFAK pouch and a full medic bag. Plain gauze can be used to pack a wound, as backing over a hemostatic dressing, as a conventional dressing over a laceration or abrasion, and to secure a splint. Which of those you do, and when, is a matter of your training and your protocol.

Plain gauze is not scope-limited: Applying a dressing is within the reach of any trained first-aid provider. Wound packing is a different matter — it is a taught, hands-on skill, and which wounds may be packed is governed by your training and your protocol, not by the label on a roll. The one thing worth being unambiguous about is what this roll is not: It carries no hemostatic agent. If your protocol calls for a hemostatic dressing on a life-threatening bleed, carry a CoTCCC-recommended hemostatic and keep this gauze for everything else.

What is crinkle gauze and why is it preferred over flat gauze for wound care?

Crinkle gauze (also called fluffed or krinkle gauze) is cotton gauze processed to have a textured, three-dimensional surface rather than a flat weave. The crinkle texture creates more surface area per unit volume, which increases the gauze's capacity to absorb blood and wound exudate. It also conforms more readily to irregular wound surfaces compared to flat gauze. For wound packing, the crinkle texture provides better friction against wound walls, helping to maintain the packed position and sustain pressure on bleeding vessels.

Can MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze be used for wound packing to control hemorrhage?

Yes. Like all crinkle gauze products, MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze can be used for wound packing in conjunction with a pressure bandage to control hemorrhage from penetrating wounds. Firmly pack the gauze into the wound cavity, working from the deepest point outward, then apply a pressure bandage such as an Israeli Bandage or ETD over the packing to maintain sustained pressure. For wounds with arterial hemorrhage, pairing with a hemostatic agent as the deepest layer significantly improves hemostatic efficacy.

How does MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze compare to NAR Compressed Gauze?

Both are sterile crinkle cotton gauze products for the same core applications. The NAR Compressed Gauze (30-0052) is 4.5 in. wide (vs. 4 in. for MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze) and is vacuum-packed using NAR's proprietary compression process into a 3×2×1 in. cube with easy-open tear notches. Is MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze sterile?

Yes. MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze is sterile and packaged to maintain sterility until the packaging is opened. It is suitable for application to open wounds. As with all sterile medical supplies, the sterility is compromised if the packaging is damaged, torn, or wetted, or if the gauze contacts a non-sterile surface after opening. Inspect the packaging before use and discard any unit with a compromised seal.

What is the best way to use MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze with a hemostatic agent?

Apply the hemostatic dressing (e.g., QuikClot Combat Gauze, ChitoGauze, or Celox gauze) as the deepest layer in the wound cavity, directly against the bleeding source. Then use MED-TAC Crinkle Gauze to fill remaining void space in the wound and provide additional fluid absorption. Apply firm direct pressure over the packed wound for a minimum of 3 minutes to allow the hemostatic agent to initiate clotting. Secure with a pressure bandage to maintain pressure during transport to higher care.
