NIO Intraosseous Device w/Fixation Dressing - Infant
The infant member of the NIO family, SKU NIO-I: a manual intraosseous device with the patented Stepped Needle® geometry, tapering from a 14G shaft to an 18G tip. It ships sterile in a peel-back blister with a fixation dressing, weighs 2.5 oz packaged, and needs no batteries, assembly or additional parts. The manufacturer specifies a 15 mm penetration depth and states the device is for proximal-tibia access in patients from gestational age 36 weeks and a minimum 5 lb (2.3 kg) through 3 years.
SKU NIO-I · 2.5 ozStepped Needle® 14G → 18GManual — no batteriesSterile · single use

The step in the needle is the whole device. On a tibia whose cortex is a few millimeters thick, a geometry that stops itself is doing work no amount of operator care can be relied on to do.

▾Who Carries It

Neonatal and pediatric transport teams and NICU and PICU services holding an access device sized for the smallest patients they carry · HEMS and critical-care retrieval crews whose caseload includes neonates and infants · Paramedics and EMS services whose protocol authorizes pediatric intraosseous access and whose current IO needle is not sized for an infant tibia · Emergency departments and resuscitation trolleys covering the gap below the pediatric device · Physicians, PAs and nurses credentialed for IO access in expeditionary, humanitarian and disaster settings.

Scope of practice. Intraosseous vascular access is an invasive procedure performed only by appropriately trained and credentialed personnel, within their scope and under their local protocol and medical direction. That is the whole caveat and it is not a formality on this device: The patient population is the least forgiving one in medicine, and the decision to establish IO access, the choice of site, the confirmation of placement and everything given through the needle afterwards belong to the provider and the protocol.
