This is the flat cut. In a pocket shaped for a curved plate it will sit proud at the edges, so check the pocket geometry before ordering — the curved 6"×6" is the option where the pocket is contoured. A side plate is a small armor panel (typically 6"×6") that inserts into the side pockets of a plate carrier vest, covering the lateral torso — specifically the liver, spleen, kidneys, and descending aorta. While front and rear 10"×12" plates protect the anterior and posterior chest, the sides of the torso remain unprotected without side plates. These organs are highly vascular and life-threatening injuries to this area are often not survivable without rapid surgical intervention, making lateral coverage critically important in active threat scenarios.

The VISM Level III+ CURVED Ballistic Side Hard Plate has a single curve that allows it to follow the natural contour of the side torso, improving comfort and reducing the gap between the plate and the body. Both provide Level III+ protection; the choice depends on whether you prioritize flat-panel compatibility (flat) or ergonomic body conformance (curved).

Will the VISM 6"×6" side plate fit my plate carrier?

The VISM BPSD66 is designed to fit the side plate pockets of most modern plate carriers and armor vests that accept a standard 6"×6" side plate. However, side plate pocket geometry varies between manufacturers — some are designed for rectangular plates (e.g., 6"×8") rather than square 6"×6" formats. Verify your carrier's side pocket dimensions before ordering. The plate can also be used in the side pockets of certain soft armor carriers that accept hard plate inserts.

Does the VISM Side Hard Plate provide protection against handgun rounds as well as rifle rounds?

Yes — any armor panel rated to Level III+ (rifle protection) necessarily stops all Level I, IIA, II, and IIIA handgun threats as well, since the NIJ threat scale is hierarchical. Level III+ rifle-rated armor exceeds the ballistic performance threshold of all lower NIJ levels.
