What is the difference between a Level IIIA hard plate and Level IIIA soft armor?

Both protect against the same handgun threats (up to .44 Magnum and .357 SIG per NIJ 0101.06). The difference is construction and form: Level IIIA soft armor uses flexible aramid (Kevlar, Twaron) or UHMWPE fabric panels that conform to the body's shape and are typically used in concealable vest carriers. Level IIIA hard plates use rigid UHMWPE construction — they are stiffer, typically thinner, and insert into hard plate carrier pockets. Hard plates generally produce lower backface deformation, while soft armor is more concealable under clothing.

Will the VISM IIIA+ UHMWPE plate stop rifle rounds?

No — Level IIIA protection is limited to handgun threats including 9mm, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, .44 Magnum, and .357 Magnum. The VISM IIIA+ UHMWPE plate does not provide protection against rifle calibers (5.56mm, 7.62mm, etc.). For rifle-rated protection, Level III, III+, or IV hard armor plates are required. This plate is appropriate for environments where the primary threat is handgun ammunition.

What does the Polyurea coating on the VISM IIIA+ plate do?

The sprayed-on Polyurea outer coating on the VISM IIIA+ UHMWPE plate serves multiple functions: it fully seals the UHMWPE laminate against moisture ingress, provides abrasion and scratch resistance for daily handling, and protects the plate edges from chipping or delamination. UHMWPE fibers are slightly susceptible to UV degradation over long-term direct sun exposure, and the Polyurea coating provides an additional UV barrier. The coating significantly extends the operational service life of the plate compared to uncoated UHMWPE.
