VISM Soft Ballistic Panel (Rectangle) — Level IIIA

A flat, flexible UHMWPE soft armor insert for the back panel of a bag — about a pound in every size, so it conforms to the bag rather than fighting it. Be clear about what this is. A bag panel is not worn PPE: it covers what the bag covers, while the bag is between you and the threat, against the handgun rounds named above. It is not rifle protection and it is not a substitute for a plan or for training. Soft armor is a dated item. Record the manufacture date on receipt, keep panels out of prolonged heat and direct sunlight, store them flat rather than folded or compressed, and inspect the cover and stitching on a schedule.

What size VISM Soft Ballistic Panel should I choose for a school backpack?

For most standard school backpacks, the 10"×12" (BSF-1012) is the recommended size — it provides the most protection coverage while fitting the back panel of typical student backpacks. The 8"×10" (BSF-810) works for smaller packs or younger children. Measure the interior back panel pocket of your specific backpack before ordering. Insert the panel in the back pocket closest to the wearer's back (the spine-side pocket) so the panel sits between the wearer and an incoming front-facing threat.

Will the VISM Soft Level IIIA Panel stop rifle rounds from an AR-15 or AK-47?

No — Level IIIA soft armor protects against handgun threats only. Rifle rounds from AR-15 (5.56mm), AK-47 (7.62×39mm), and similar platforms will penetrate Level IIIA soft armor. For rifle-rated backpack protection, the VISM Hard Ballistic Panel (Rectangle) Level III+ provides protection against 5.56×45mm, 7.62×39mm, and 7.62×51mm rifle threats. The Level IIIA soft panel is appropriate where the primary threat is handgun-caliber weapons, which represent the majority of school and workplace shooting events.

How much does the VISM Soft Level IIIA Panel add to a backpack's weight?

Approximately 1 lb across all three panel sizes (8"×10", 10"×12", 11"×14"). UHMWPE is a very efficient material for soft armor applications, achieving Level IIIA protection at extremely low weight. Is the VISM Soft Level IIIA Panel flexible or rigid?

The VISM Soft Ballistic Rectangle Panel is a soft/semi-flexible panel — it has more flexibility than hard armor plates (rigid UHMWPE or ceramic composites) while still being more structured than woven aramid soft armor. This flexibility allows it to conform to the natural curvature of a bag's back panel and the wearer's back. It is not as pliable as a woven fabric soft armor vest insert, but it will seat naturally in most backpack back pockets without creating uncomfortable pressure points.

Can the VISM Soft Level IIIA Rectangle Panel be used in a plate carrier?

The VISM Soft Ballistic Rectangle Panel is designed for bag/backpack use, not plate carrier integration. Plate carriers are designed for hard armor plates with specific cut profiles (SAPI Cut, Shooter's Cut) that include retention features. The flat rectangular soft panel lacks the structural rigidity and cut geometry needed for secure plate carrier integration. For plate carrier soft armor, use purpose-designed soft armor panel sets such as the VISM Level IIIA+ Ballistic UHMWPE Plate or the Chase Tactical SA3100 panel sets.
