Can the Esmark bandage be used as a tourniquet?

While rubber-based elastic bandages can generate significant compression, achieving consistent arterial occlusion requires a dedicated windlass or ratcheting tourniquet mechanism with defined pressure control. For life-threatening extremity hemorrhage requiring tourniquet application, use a CoTCCC-recommended tourniquet such as the CAT Gen 7 or SAM XT. The Esmark is appropriate as a compression reinforcement layer over a primary wound dressing.
