Needle chest decompression (NCD) is recommended by the Committee on TCCC for suspected tension pneumothorax with respiratory distress and/or hemodynamic compromise when performed by trained providers following protocol.

What is the purpose of the PTFE catheter in the MTI decompression needle?

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is used for its exceptionally low coefficient of friction, which ensures smooth, controlled catheter advancement into the pleural space after the needle is withdrawn. It also provides excellent resistance to kinking — a critical advantage in field conditions where the catheter must remain patent during the dwell period following decompression. Yes. The MTI Chest Decompression Needle is not made with natural rubber latex and is classified as non-pyrogenic. It is sterilized using ethylene oxide (EO) and supplied in a peel-open sterile pouch marked with lot number and expiry date. It is intended for single use only — do not resterilize or reuse.

What sites are recommended for needle decompression with the MTI needle?

Per current TCCC guidelines, the two CoTCCC-recognized sites are: (1) the 2nd intercostal space at the midclavicular line (2 ICS-MCL), and (2) the 4th–5th intercostal space at the anterior axillary line (AAL) as an alternate. The needle should be inserted perpendicular to the chest wall to the hub, held 5–10 seconds for full decompression, then the needle is removed leaving the catheter in place. If unsuccessful, a second attempt at the alternate site using a new needle/catheter unit is recommended before proceeding to further interventions.
