Is the 28 Fr NPA CoTCCC-recommended?

Yes. CoTCCC guidelines recommend a nasopharyngeal airway as the first-line airway adjunct for trauma patients requiring airway management who are not in respiratory arrest. 28 French is the recommended adult size per CoTCCC protocols.

Who is authorized to use an NPA in a tactical environment?

NPA use is within the scope of TCCC-trained Combat Lifesavers (CLS), EMTs, paramedics, and all higher-level medical providers. Lay first aid providers (e.g., Stop the Bleed-only) should not attempt NPA insertion unless they have received specific airway adjunct training.

Why silicone instead of PVC for a nasopharyngeal airway?

Silicone remains pliable at temperatures where PVC stiffens or kinks, including below freezing. In cold-weather operations, a PVC NPA can crimp during insertion or lose its shape before the airway is established. Silicone eliminates this failure mode. The NAR NPA is rated to −5°F.

What is the shelf life of the Pre-Lubricated NPA?
