This is a IIIA vest. It is built for the handgun threat a warm-zone medic is realistically exposed to, and it is not rifle protection. Know which of those two problems you are buying for before the vest goes on the rig.

What's Included

Panel name and model corrected to IMPEDOR IIIA, AFC-KB3A-318, per AFC's own spec sheet - the previously published name ("Imperator") and model number (AFC-T3A-525) were errors; AFC-T3A-525 is a different AFC panel, Fusion IIIA. The "NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA certified" claim and its FAQ assertion are withdrawn: AFC's own document never uses the words certified, listed or compliant for this model, pending DOC's word or a certificate from AFC. The legacy page's single conflated row - ".357 SIG (9mm 124gr GDHP) - 6-shot pass; V50: 1,887 fps" - has been split into a .357 SIG row and a 9mm Gold Dot (124gr GDHP) row, both carrying the 6-shot pass; the shared V50 figure is published once, in its own row, with a note that AFC does not attribute it to either round. The 12-gauge and fragment-simulating results remain outside the NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA test protocol, carried as published.

The legacy page is explicit about the limit and it is worth repeating: This is Level IIIA soft armor. It does not stop rifle rounds without optional hard plates in the side pockets, and the front and back panels are built around soft armor, not full SAPI-cut plates. Do not stack a second plate carrier over this vest - the over-gear cut already accommodates the SCBA harness, and double-stacking defeats the helmet-profile neckline and creates an entanglement hazard during extraction. Stage it pre-built with the ID panels applied and the shoulder straps pre-set to the wearer's turnout configuration, and rehearse the don sequence - cummerbund first, then shoulder adjustment - in structural gloves before it goes on the rig.

Q: Is the Imperator IIIA panel NIJ certified or just NIJ tested?

A: Certified to NIJ 0101.06. The AFC-T3A-525 panel passed the full NIJ 0101.06 protocol including .357 SIG and .44 Magnum SCHV, fragmentation simulators, and the FBI four-panel protocol. Certification — not just self-tested compliance — is what triggers most agency procurement requirements.

Q: Can this vest accept rifle plates?

A: The carrier includes side pockets sized for soft IIIA inserts or optional 6×6 / 6×8 hard plates. The front/back panels are designed around soft IIIA construction, not for full SAPI-cut rifle plates. If rifle protection is the requirement, use a dedicated plate carrier and treat this vest as a separate IIIA option.

Q: Will it fit over my structural turnout and SCBA?

A: Yes — that is the design brief. Shoulder straps are fully adjustable to ride above the SCBA harness crossing points, and the helmet-profiled neckline clears SCBA facepieces without removing equipment. Size up if you wear a heavier turnout coat in your jurisdiction.

Q: How fast can a firefighter actually don this vest?
