Bandage Shears
5.5 in. Lister-pattern bandage scissors in 410 stainless steel. The blunt foot on the lower blade lets the shear slide flat against skin while it cuts a dressing, which is the whole reason the pattern has survived since the nineteenth century. Angled blades take a full-length cut in one motion over a curved limb.

Cutting a dressing off a wound with a pointed scissor is how you make a second wound. The blunt foot is not a comfort feature — it is the reason this pattern is standard.

The Lister pattern is named for Joseph Lister and defined by two features: the blunt foot on the lower blade, and the angle between blade and handle that keeps knuckles clear of the patient. 5.5 in. is the size that fits an IFAK, a cargo pocket or an instrument roll while still cutting a full dressing in one pass.

Who Carries It

Nursing stations, emergency departments and clinics as the everyday dressing-removal instrument · EMS and fire in the jump bag alongside the heavier trauma shear · Tactical and IFAK builds where a compact cutter is needed and space for a 7.5 in. shear is not there · Training programmes stocking a low-cost instrument for skills stations.

These are dressing shears. For rapid exposure of a casualty through multi-layer clothing, carry dedicated trauma shears; using a 5.5 in. bandage shear for that job is slow and puts the instrument and the provider's hand under load it was not designed for.
