What is the 4" Israeli Emergency Bandage and what wounds is it best for?

The 4" Emergency Bandage® by Safeguard Medical is a compact, all-in-one trauma pressure dressing combining a non-adherent sterile pad, built-in pressure applicator bar, elastic bandage, and closure bar in a single unit. The 4" width is best suited for extremity wounds on arms, lower legs, and hands, as well as scalp and head wounds where its smaller pad size and lighter weight are advantages over the 6" version. It is also the preferred size for IFAK pouches and EDC medical kits where storage space is limited. Its FDA-cleared pressure applicator delivers 30–40 lbs of directional wound pressure sufficient for moderate-to-severe extremity bleeds.

How do I apply the 4" Emergency Bandage one-handed?

Apply gloves if available and open the sterile package without contaminating the pad. Place the non-adherent pad directly over the wound with the white pad side against the injury. Feed the elastic bandage through the pressure applicator bar on the first pass, positioning the bar directly over the wound site. Continue wrapping in circular passes around the extremity, maintaining firm pressure with each layer. Secure with the built-in closure bar by hooking or looping the terminal end — no clips or tape are required. The one-handed design specifically allows self-application to a wounded extremity without assistance, critical in solo or remote emergencies.

What is the difference between the 4" and 6" Emergency Bandage?

The 4" Emergency Bandage is more compact and lightweight, ideal for arm, lower leg, hand, and scalp wounds, and preferred for IFAK and EDC carry where weight and volume matter. The 6" Emergency Bandage has a larger non-adherent pad for greater wound coverage and sufficient bandage length to wrap the thigh, upper arm, or torso multiple times to build sustained pressure. The 6" is the preferred choice for large-area wounds, severe hemorrhage, thigh and junctional injuries, traumatic amputations, and blast injuries where wound surface area exceeds what a 4" pad can adequately cover.

Who manufactures the Emergency Bandage and is it still made in Israel?

The Emergency Bandage is manufactured by Safeguard Medical, which acquired PerSys Medical in 2019 — the U.S. distributor that had previously acquired First Care Products Ltd., the Israeli company founded by Bernard Bar-Natan that invented the bandage in the 1980s. Despite corporate changes, the bandage continues to be manufactured in the same Israeli factory by the same experienced team, with the same product specification. The current packaging uses Safeguard Medical's grey RAMPART™ System branding. Approximately 1.5–2 million Emergency Bandages are produced annually, deployed in over 50 countries.

Is the 4" Emergency Bandage used by military and law enforcement?

Yes. The Emergency Bandage was adopted by U.S. Army Rangers in 2001 and became standard issue for all U.S. Army soldiers during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, where it earned the widely used nickname "Israeli Bandage" from American soldiers who first encountered it with NATO peacekeepers in Bosnia. It has since been adopted as a primary trauma dressing by military, law enforcement, EMS, and first responder organizations in more than 50 countries.
