A backpack with soft armor built into its front, back and side panels that unfolds into a wearable vest in about two seconds. Masada rates the soft armor NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA. Cordura 500D shell, black only, offered bare or with one or two optional polyethylene hard plates.

NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA and the NIJ 0101.07 HG/RF ratings are separate test regimes and neither can be read as the other. The Accepts row above describes the hard-plate positions this platform is built to receive; the ratings quoted belong to the soft panels and plates themselves, not to the pack. The soft armor ships built in; hard plates ship only with the Plates option that names them. "Level III+" is a manufacturer designation rather than an NIJ classification. Plates in this class are tested by an independent ballistics laboratory against criteria the manufacturer specifies — a real test, run outside the NIJ standard's threat set.

Three cautions before you rely on it. First, the level: The soft armor is stated as Level IIIA, which is a handgun-threat rating - it is not rifle protection, and the optional "Level III+" plates are a manufacturer special-threat designation, not an NIJ classification. Second, the drill: a two-second conversion is a trained two seconds. Practice it, in the clothing you actually wear, until it is automatic. Third, the life: Soft armor ages. Record the manufacture date on receipt, keep it out of prolonged heat and sunlight, and inspect the panels and stitching on a schedule.
