Product information

MED-TAC International Decompression Needle — 14G × 3.25"

The MED-TAC International Decompression Needle is a rugged needle/catheter combo for the immediate management of suspected tension pneumothorax by trained providers. The high-quality stainless-steel needle is paired with a smooth PTFE catheter and an integrated flash chamber for rapid placement confirmation. A low-profile, easy-open protective tube with a textured twist top and pocket clip keeps the unit secure and ready.

Key Features

  • Purpose-built for field use: 14-gauge × 3.25" stainless-steel needle with back-cut beveled tip for decisive chest wall entry.
  • Immediate feedback: Integrated flash chamber helps confirm pleural cavity entry when used per protocol.
  • Low-friction catheter: PTFE catheter designed for smooth advancement and sustained decompression.
  • Duty-ready container: Protective tube with textured twist top and clip for fast, one-hand access in gloves.
  • Sterile & single-use: EO-sterilized, non-pyrogenic, not made with natural rubber latex.

What’s Included

  • One (1) sterile 14G × 3.25" needle + catheter assembly with flash chamber
  • Protective carry tube with textured twist cap and pocket clip
  • Peel-open sterile pouch with lot/expiry

Specifications

PRODUCT FAQ

Is this device CoTCCC-approved?

Wording matters. The Committee on TCCC (CoTCCC) provides recommendations on indications and techniques; it does not “approve” brands. This device is designed to support CoTCCC-recommended needle decompression practice when used by trained personnel under protocol.

Why 14-gauge and 3.25 inches?

A 14-gauge catheter length of approximately 3.25" is widely used to improve the chance of traversing chest wall thickness while maintaining a balance of rigidity and flow. Always follow your medical direction for device choice and site selection.

Does the flash chamber guarantee correct placement?

No device can guarantee success. The flash chamber is a human-factors aid that may help recognize pleural entry. Clinical judgment, proper landmarking, and continuous reassessment are essential.

Can I reuse the catheter if it kinks?

No. This is a sterile, single-use device. If the catheter fails to maintain decompression, follow your protocols for reassessment and next steps.

What about patients with thicker chest walls?

Follow agency guidance. Landmark choice and alternative access strategies may be indicated. Device selection should align with your medical direction and local population needs.

CLINICAL RATIONALE

Evidence & Training Rationale

  • Needle chest decompression (NCD) is recommended by the Committee on TCCC for suspected tension pneumothorax with respiratory distress and/or hemodynamic compromise when performed by trained providers following protocol.
  • Longer catheters (approx. 3.25") help address variable chest wall thickness and can improve pleural access when correctly landmarked.
  • Human-factors features (protective tube, textured cap, flash chamber) aim to reduce time-to-access and aid recognition of placement, but do not replace training.

Training rationale: Emphasize landmarking, insertion angle, confirmation cues, catheter securement, continuous monitoring, and post-procedure reassessment. Use simulation and after-action reviews to improve success and reduce complications.
