PRODUCT INFORMATION
North American Rescue · Oversized / Bariatric Litter
OSL Oversized Litter
A bi-fold litter built for patients who exceed a standard litter's envelope — 31 in. of open width instead of the usual 20 to 22, six stirrups instead of two, and a flame-retardant Nomex/Kevlar-blend cover. North American Rescue publishes a 1,600 lb floor-loaded and 1,200 lb hanging payload and states it is U.S. Air Force Certified Safe-to-Fly.

A larger patient on a standard-width litter is not merely uncomfortable — the roll-off risk during a hoist or a vehicle load is the reason a wider platform exists.

The payload figures above are reproduced exactly as North American Rescue publishes them — floor-loaded and hanging are different numbers and are not interchangeable. Neither has been rounded or converted here. This litter is a transport platform and makes no spinal-motion-restriction claim. Before pairing it with a litter stand, hoist rigging or vehicle mount, verify that the receiving equipment is rated for both the 31 in. width and the loaded weight.

Who Carries It

EMS and hospital teams moving bariatric patients where a standard 20 to 22 in. platform creates a roll-off risk · DoD and MEDEVAC elements loading oversized casualties for hoist or aircraft movement · Search and rescue needing a high-payload platform that stays stable under load · Industrial emergency response in oil and gas, construction and mining, where the workforce profile and the bulk of worn equipment both push past a standard litter.

Width buys more than patient comfort. It accommodates a casualty who still has bulk gear, splints or external devices attached, and the six stirrups spread the load across the floor rather than concentrating it — which is what reduces tipping during a load or a hoist. The trade is storage footprint: this is a deliberately larger platform, and it is the wrong choice when compactness rather than patient size is the constraint.

No specialised training is required beyond standard litter-carry technique, but crew size is a real planning factor. A bariatric move commonly needs four to six carriers depending on patient size and terrain; assign them before the lift, not during it.
