North American Rescue — Responder Vest Armor

Responder Ballistic Vest Side Armor Pouches

NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA soft-armor side pouches that close the lateral flank gap on the NAR Responder Ballistic Vest — completing circumferential torso coverage front, rear, and side against handgun threats and fragmentation. PFAS-free, MOLLE-compatible, built for Fire/EMS rescue task force and daily wear. Black, Coyote Tan, Red.

A front-and-rear vest leaves the flank open. Working a casualty — crouching, turning, moving between patients — presents the lateral lower torso to threat angles a front/rear-only setup never covers.

What closes the flank gap on the Responder Vest?

These side pouches do. They complete the circumferential ballistic architecture of the NAR Responder Vest: the front and rear panels cover the cardiac, pulmonary, and spinal zones, the cummerbund extends lateral coverage around the chest wall, and these pouches cover the flank zone between the cummerbund and the hip — an anatomically significant region where the lateral liver, spleen, kidneys, and the flanks of the abdominal aorta and iliac vessels are exposed to oblique shot angles. They attach to the Responder Vest cummerbund system with no separate carrier, so a unit can scale protection by mission: base vest for patrol, cummerbund for elevated-threat activations, side pouches for maximum lateral coverage in warm-zone work. Like the rest of the Responder line, construction is PFAS-free — meaningful for Fire/EMS who wear armor in skin contact daily across years of service.

Why These Pouches

Closes The Flank Gap

When to Deploy the Responder Ballistic Vest Side Armor Pouches

  • Hard armor lateral protection in rifle-threat environments: When the warm zone has a potential rifle threat, the side armor pouches accept hard plates to upgrade lateral protection beyond what soft IIIA provides.
  • Completing the full Responder Ballistic System: The side armor pouches mount to the cummerbund to create circumferential protection — front soft armor panel + back panel + cummerbund side soft armor + side hard plates in the side pouches.
  • Blast fragmentation protection at MCI events: Secondary devices and bomb threats at MCI events can produce lateral fragmentation — side armor pouches contain plates that protect against this threat vector.
  • High-risk facility response teams: Hospital or facility security teams configured for armed intruder response who operate in spaces with potential rifle threats add side pouches and plates to complete their protection.
  • Training configuration for full-system exercises: RTF exercises using the complete ballistic system (including side armor) build muscle memory for the weight and movement profile responders will encounter in actual warm zone operations.

What's in the Responder Ballistic Vest Side Armor Pouches

Each package contains a pair of side armor pouches:

  • 2 × Side armor plate pouches (sold as a pair)
  • MOLLE-compatible attachment system for cummerbund integration
  • Accommodates 6 in. × 8 in. hard armor plates (plates sold separately)
  • Made of 1000-denier nylon
  • Note: Hard armor plates are NOT included — pouches only

How the Side Armor Pouches Compare

Side Armor Pouches vs. no side armor: Front/back panels cover the principal threat axis. Side armor extends coverage to the lateral torso — critical when the threat is oblique or the responder turns to treat a patient, exposing their side. Side pouches with plates close the lateral protection gap.

Side Armor Pouches vs. Cummerbund alone: The cummerbund provides soft armor lateral coverage and fit adjustment. Adding side armor pouches with hard plates upgrades the lateral coverage level. The pouches mount to the cummerbund — both are required for the full hard-armor lateral configuration.

Side Armor Pouches vs. integrated side plate pockets on military carriers: Military plate carriers have integrated side pockets designed for combat use. The Responder system side pouches are designed for Fire/EMS — compatible with PFAS-free construction, Fire/EMS operational constraints, and the Responder Vest attachment system.

Hard side plates vs. soft armor at the sides: Soft IIIA at the sides (cummerbund alone) stops pistol threats; hard plates stop rifle rounds. Assess your threat environment and equip accordingly. See the full Responder Ballistic System.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do the Side Armor Pouches come with plates included?

A: The Side Armor Pouches are carriers only — plates are sold separately. Confirm the plate size and protection level required for your threat environment before ordering. Contact MED-TAC International for compatible plate recommendations for the Responder system.

Q: What plate size do the Side Armor Pouches accept?

A: Refer to the product datasheet for the specific plate size (length x width) the side pouches accommodate. Standard side armor plates are typically 6″ × 6″ or 6″ × 8″ — confirm the pouch dimensions match the plates you intend to use.

Q: Do the Side Armor Pouches attach to a standard MOLLE cummerbund?

A: The side armor pouches are designed for the NAR Responder Ballistic Vest cummerbund attachment system. Compatibility with other MOLLE cummerbunds depends on the attachment interface. Confirm with MED-TAC International before ordering for use with a non-NAR cummerbund.

Q: What is the NSN for the Responder Ballistic Vest Side Armor Pouches?

A: Contact MED-TAC International for current NSN and government procurement options for the side armor pouches as standalone components.

Q: Does adding side armor pouches significantly impact mobility for patient care?

A: Side plates add weight and restrict some lateral torso movement compared to soft-armor-only configurations. RTF responders should train with the full configured system — including side plates — to identify and adapt to any mobility constraints before actual warm-zone deployment.
