Product Overview
The nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) is the CoTCCC-recommended airway adjunct for unconscious or semi-conscious casualties who cannot protect their own airway. Unlike oropharyngeal airways, which require an absent gag reflex and cannot be used in semi-conscious patients, the NPA is tolerated by patients with intact or partial gag reflexes — a critical advantage in trauma triage where level of consciousness may be fluctuating.
Teleflex's Rusch PVC NPA is the benchmark product in this category — used by military, law enforcement, and EMS organizations worldwide. The soft PVC construction conforms to the nasal anatomy without the rigidity of harder materials, reducing mucosal trauma during insertion. The beveled tip minimizes the force required for insertion and reduces the risk of nasopharyngeal injury. Inner striations allow smooth passage of suction catheters for airway maintenance during patient transport.
Selecting the correct size is critical for NPA effectiveness. The standard field assessment technique is to measure from the tip of the patient's nose to the earlobe — with the appropriate FR size providing an airway that reaches the nasopharynx without extending into the esophagus. For most adult male military casualties, 28–32 FR is the range used. Kit #1 (12–24 FR) covers pediatric to smaller adult; Kit #2 (24–36 FR) covers average to large adult male.
