TacMed™ Basic Chest Wound Kit
Penetrating chest trauma creates two problems at once — an open wound that breaks breathing mechanics, and air accumulating in the pleural space that progressively collapses a lung. This four-item kit carries the tools for both: two 3.25-inch TPAK decompression needles, a two-pack Beacon non-vented chest seal, a 5 × 9 in. ABD pad and gloves. A provider-scope kit. SKU BCWK.
2 × 3.25 in. TPAK needlesBeacon non-vented seal, 2-packProvider scopeSKU BCWK

Needle length is not a detail. Short catheters have documented failure rates reaching the pleural space through body armour or a thicker chest wall — the needle that does not arrive does nothing.

Kit Contents

One configuration, four line items, each with the job it does. Needle thoracostomy is a provider-scope intervention — read the specification note. Tap the section.

  • 2× TPAK decompression needle, 3.25 in. · provider-scope — length suited to body-armour or higher-mass patients; two allow a second attempt or a bilateral injury
  • 1× Beacon Chest Seal — non-vented, 2-pack · occlusive dressing for an open chest wound — see the specification note on vented vs non-vented
  • 1× ABD trauma pad, 5 in. × 9 in. · wound coverage, blood absorption, secondary dressing over larger blast or shotgun injuries
  • 1 pr Blackmaxx gloves, large · responder barrier protection, so nobody is hunting for gloves first

No item in this kit is annotated as CoTCCC-recommended. The legacy listing claimed the kit “contains CoTCCC-recommended item types”, which is a category claim rather than a device one: CoTCCC recommendation attaches to specific named devices, and neither the TPAK needle nor the Beacon non-vented seal appears on the recommended-device list this programme verifies against. Confirm current status with the manufacturer before relying on it in a procurement document. Note also that the seal here is non-vented. Non-vented seals occlude an open chest wound, and if a tension pneumothorax then develops the answer is decompression — which is why two needles are in the kit. Some protocols now prefer a vented seal first-line, so check your own medical direction before standardizing on this configuration. Needle thoracostomy is a provider-scope intervention: needle length and decompression site are clinical decisions for a credentialed provider under local protocol. This page is a contents and specification reference, not procedural instruction.

Who Carries It

Tactical medics and paramedics carrying a dedicated thoracic kit rather than digging for a seal and a needle in a full bag · Law enforcement active-threat responders credentialed for decompression, working penetrating chest injuries before EMS reaches the scene · Military and CLS-trained personnel, for whom thoracic trauma is the second most common cause of preventable death after hemorrhage · Plate-carrier and belt kits, where the compact format keeps chest capability within reach.

Two needles is a deliberate redundancy. A first attempt can kink, contaminate or fail to decompress, and a blast or rifle injury can involve both sides of the chest — a kit with one needle has no second answer. Everyone who carries this kit needs to be clear on whether decompression is inside their own scope of practice before the day they need it.
