How does the TacMed IVECS cool IV fluids without power?

The IVECS uses evaporative cooling — the same physics principle behind sweating. The pouch material is soaked in water for about 15 minutes before use. As ambient heat causes this water to evaporate from the pouch surface, heat energy is drawn away from the IV bag inside, keeping its temperature significantly lower than ambient air. Unlike cold packs that transfer heat from one mass to another and warm up quickly, evaporative cooling continues as long as there is water in the pouch to evaporate and airflow around it.

How long does the IVECS keep fluids cool?

The IVECS can maintain IV fluids at a safe temperature for up to 18 hours under normal use conditions. In USAMRMC testing at 54°C (130°F) and 5% humidity with no wind over 13.5 hours, the bag inside the IVECS peaked at 50°C — four degrees below the recommended maximum temperature for fluid administration (52.2°C / 126°F). Real-world performance improves with any airflow or partial shade.

What IV bag sizes fit in the IVECS?

The TacMed IVECS accommodates both 500 mL and 1,000 mL standard IV bags. The pouch design conforms to both common IV bag sizes used in military and prehospital care (normal saline, lactated Ringer's solution).

Can the IVECS be used as a pressure infuser?

Yes. A standard blood pressure (BP) cuff can be wrapped around the outside of the fluid-filled IVECS and inflated to provide pressurized infusion when gravity drip rates are inadequate. This dual-function capability makes the IVECS particularly versatile in austere settings where pressure bags or electronic infusion pumps are unavailable.

Is the IVECS reusable?

Yes. The TacMed IVECS is a reusable system — simply resoak the pouch before the next use. This reusability makes it cost-effective for organizations that regularly operate in hot environments and need sustained fluid temperature management capability without consuming single-use cold packs for every IV administration event.

Can the IVECS be used when there is no wind or airflow?

Yes. Airflow improves efficiency but is not required. USAMRMC testing was conducted with zero wind in 54°C/5% humidity conditions, and the IVECS still kept the IV bag below the 52.2°C damage threshold for the full 13.5-hour test duration. Any incidental airflow — movement during transport, vehicle speed, or partial shade — improves performance further.

How does the IVECS double as a pressure infuser?

A standard blood pressure cuff can be wrapped around the outside of the fluid-filled IVECS and inflated to provide pressurized infusion when gravity drip rates are inadequate — for example, during rapid fluid resuscitation for hemorrhagic shock or when the IV site is above the level of the bag.
