PRODUCT INFORMATION
Ferno · Short Spinal Extrication Device
Ferno KED (Kendrick Extrication Device)
The original Kendrick Extrication Device — a short spinal immobilization device for extricating a seated patient from a vehicle or confined space. Ferno describes it as horizontally flexible so it wraps around a seated torso from behind, and vertically rigid so it supports alignment through the rotation from seated to supine. Color-coded chest, groin and head straps immobilize torso, head and neck as one unit, and Ferno states the device can remain in place for X-ray and ALS procedures. SKU KED-125; 8 lb.

The whole problem of seated extrication is the rotation. A device that is rigid enough to hold alignment but flexible enough to be applied behind a seated patient is what makes that rotation survivable.

Specifications are manufacturer-stated. The spinal-motion-restriction claims are Ferno's own: the device is described as immobilizing torso, head and neck, and as remaining in place for radiography and ALS procedures. A KED is applied under a protocol, with a cervical collar and a receiving platform, by providers trained and authorized in spinal-motion restriction — device selection does not substitute for that protocol.

▾Who Carries It

ALS and BLS transport units carrying a short spinal device as standard equipment · Fire and rescue extrication teams working seated patients out of vehicles · Industrial and confined-space rescue teams where a long board cannot be positioned behind the patient · EMS education programs teaching seated extrication to protocol.

What the KED buys is application geometry. A long board cannot get behind a seated patient in a compressed vehicle; a device that conforms horizontally can be slid down between the seat back and the patient and then closed around the torso, after which its vertical rigidity carries the alignment through the lift and rotation. That is a sequencing advantage, not a substitute for manual in-line stabilization while the device is applied.

Two protocol notes. Spinal-motion-restriction practice varies substantially between services and has changed in many systems over the past decade — apply this device under your own medical direction. And the X-ray compatibility Ferno describes is a receiving-facility convenience worth briefing to the ED, since removing a correctly applied KED for imaging reintroduces exactly the movement it was placed to prevent.
