Application per the manufacturer: place a sterile gauze pad on the wound; position the cap with the elastic anchor point behind the head; draw the elastic bands forward until the anchor is firm against the back of the head and secure the hook-and-loop fasteners to the front; add the chin strap and any additional compression straps as needed; then monitor and adjust. Applying external compression to a scalp wound is within the scope of most trained responders. Head and facial trauma can accompany injuries — skull fracture, spinal injury, altered mental status — whose assessment and management are separate clinical decisions that this device does not address.

No. The Trauma Cap is a compression device — it does not include a gauze pad. Before applying the cap, place a sterile gauze pad (4×4 is standard) directly over the scalp wound. The cap then goes over the gauze to hold it in compression against the wound. Standard 4×4 or 5×9 gauze pads from any IFAK or trauma kit are appropriate for use with the Trauma Cap.
