Is the NcStar VISM Ballistic Soft Panel Level IIIA rated?

Yes. The NcStar VISM BSC series soft panels are rated to NIJ Standard 0101.06 Level IIIA. This is the highest handgun-only protection level defined by the National Institute of Justice, tested to stop .357 SIG FMJ and .44 Magnum SJHP rounds. The panel is stand-alone rated, meaning no additional backer is required to achieve the certified protection level.

What material is the NcStar soft panel made from?

The panel is constructed from Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), a cross-ply thermoplastic fiber material. UHMWPE is recognized for delivering Level IIIA ballistic performance at a lower weight compared to traditional aramid (Kevlar-class) soft armor panels, reducing fatigue during extended wear.

What plate carrier sizes is the 10x12 panel compatible with?

The 10"×12" Shooter's Cut panel fits the standard plate pocket found in the vast majority of modern MOLLE-compatible plate carriers, including Chase Tactical LVPC, DOS, LOPC, MEAC, and QRPC models, as well as NcStar's own laser-cut plate carrier platform. Verify your carrier's plate pocket dimensions before ordering to confirm fit.

Will the NcStar soft panel stop rifle rounds?

No. NIJ Level IIIA protection covers handgun threats including .44 Magnum and .357 SIG, but does not provide rated protection against rifle calibers such as 5.56mm, .308, or 7.62×39mm. For rifle-rated protection, a hard armor plate rated Level III or Level IV must be added — the soft panel can then serve as a backer behind the hard plate for enhanced trauma management.

Can the NcStar soft panel be used as a backer behind a hard plate?

Yes. The NcStar VISM soft panel can be used as a stand-alone Level IIIA insert or placed behind a hard armor plate (Level III or IV) as a soft backer. When stacked with a hard plate, the soft panel provides additional back-face deformation (BFD) control and can extend protection to handgun threats in plate-gap zones. The panel's slim UHMWPE profile keeps the combined stack thickness manageable.
