evidence-based evaluation applies to two items in the kit: the C-A-T® tourniquet and QuikClot® Combat Gauze®. It does not extend to the plain gauze, the bandage, the chest seals or the kit as a whole. The Individual Intermediate kit is the same kit without the Combat Gauze®. How the contents work together. Life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg gets the C-A-T®: high and tight over clothing when the bleeding source cannot be seen or the scene is not safe, otherwise on bare skin 2–3 in. above the wound, never across a joint. Write the time on the casualty with the marker and leave the tourniquet on for EMS. A deep wound in the groin, armpit or neck, or one a tourniquet cannot control, is packed tight with the QuikClot® Combat Gauze® and held with firm pressure for at least 3 minutes and until the bleeding stops (plain gauze needs at least 10 minutes); the emergency bandage then goes over the packing to keep the pressure on. The chest seals cover an open wound of the chest — never pack the chest or abdomen. For a child 2 years old or younger, use direct pressure or a pressure wrap.

Hemostatic gauze is only as good as the packing behind it — a location that stocks the Advanced kit should train to it. Restock the kit the day the seal is broken.
