MedSource Labs N.I.K. Needle Decompression Indicator Kit
A 3.25 in. rigid-PTFE decompression needle paired with the Capnospot® colorimetric CO₂ indicator, in a hard-shell case inside a 7 in. × 3 in. Metalized pouch. The indicator changes from blue to yellow when CO₂ is detected, which is the manufacturer's answer to the oldest problem in needle decompression — knowing whether the catheter actually reached the pleural space. Two gauges are listed; select 10 Gauge or 14 Gauge at checkout.
10 G (MS-87110) · 14 G (MS-87114)3.25 in. Rigid PTFE catheterCapnospot® CO₂ indicatorEO sterile · single use

Auscultating for a rush of air in a loud environment is not confirmation. A colour change is — which is why the indicator, not the needle, is what you are actually buying here.

  • 1× Capnospot® colorimetric CO₂ indicator — male luer lock, ISO 80369. Blue to yellow on CO₂ detection; no colour change where no CO₂ is detected.
  • 1× Hard-shell protective case with twist-off cap — the manufacturer states it protects against needlestick during carry and maintains sterility, and opens one-handed
  • 1× 7 in. × 3 in. Metalized pouch with a clear front. Approximately 0.9 oz (26 g) total.

CoTCCC status None claimed for this product. The ARS needle is the CoTCCC-recommended decompression needle; no such status is published for the N.I.K., and none is asserted here.

Part numbers, dimensions, weight, materials, sterilization, latex and DEHP statements and BAA compliance are as published by MedSource Labs. Where the legacy listing carried procedural content it named its source, and it is reproduced here with that attribution intact and nothing added: Per the 2024 TCCC Guidelines as cited on that listing, a suspected tension pneumothorax is decompressed with a 14-gauge or 10-gauge needle/catheter unit inserted perpendicular to the chest wall just over the top of the lower rib, at either the 2nd intercostal space midclavicular line or the 4th/5th intercostal space anterior axillary line, held to the hub for 5 to 10 seconds, after which the needle is removed and the catheter left in place. That is a guideline citation, not this page's instruction, and the guideline edition should be checked against your current TCCC card before it is relied on — editions change and this listing has not been re-verified against the current one. No shelf life is published. Needle decompression is an invasive provider-level procedure and nothing on this page substitutes for training or medical direction.

▾Who Carries It

Military medics, corpsmen and special-operations medical personnel authorised to perform needle chest decompression · Tactical and law-enforcement medics operating in noisy or low-light environments where a colour change is more readable than an air rush is audible · Paramedics and critical-care transport crews whose protocol includes NDC and who want objective placement confirmation before committing to a catheter · Prolonged field care providers who may need to reassess a catheter hours after placement · Physicians and PAs in austere, expeditionary and disaster settings.

Scope of practice. Needle chest decompression is an advanced invasive procedure. Whether you may perform it, on which patients, and at which anatomical site is set by your licensure, your medical direction and your unit protocol — not by owning the kit. Buying the indicator does not extend anyone's scope, and a colour change is a placement cue, not a diagnosis. If NDC is outside your scope, this belongs in the kit of the provider on your team who holds it, and everyone should know in advance who that is.

CLINICAL RATIONALE

Evidence & Training Rationale

  • Objective confirmation vs. subjective cues: Capnospot is described as a visual carbon dioxide detection device intended to provide immediate visual feedback during needle thoracostomy, and is marketed as an alternative to relying on auditory assessments.
  • Designed for standard connections: The indicator is described as compatible via standard Luer lock, supporting integration with common decompression needles/catheters.
  • Device regulatory reference (Capnospot): FDA documentation referenced publicly for CapnoSpot™ Pneumothorax Decompression Indicator (K223625). (This references the indicator device; always verify your procurement requirements and IFU.)

Training rationale

  • Use as part of a complete tension pneumothorax workflow: recognition, site selection per protocol, decompression, reassessment, and definitive care/transport.
  • Train to interpret the device as one input among others (patient response, ventilatory mechanics, hemodynamics), and to re-check for catheter kinking/occlusion or misplacement when clinical improvement is absent.
  • Follow the manufacturer IFU and your medical director’s protocol for indications, technique, and post-procedure monitoring.
