What is the LX-NPA6? A complete single-use nasopharyngeal airway kit covering the full adult sizing range in one pouch. Why Carry The Full Range
A nasopharyngeal airway is a soft, flexible tube placed through the nostril to bypass obstruction at the level of the nose, nasopharynx, or base of the tongue, and to keep the tongue from falling back against the pharyngeal wall. Because it is generally tolerated by patients who still have an intact gag reflex, the NPA is frequently the first airway adjunct placed in semi-conscious casualties who will not accept an oropharyngeal airway.
Single-size carry is a common shortcut and a common failure. An airway that is too short will not bypass the obstruction; one that is too long can enter the esophagus or provoke gagging and vomiting. Carrying 22 through 32 Fr means the responder sizes to the patient in front of them rather than to whatever happened to be in the pouch — the difference between adolescent, average female, and large adult male anatomy spans this entire range.
The soft PVC construction eases insertion along the nasal floor and reduces the risk of mucosal trauma. Each airway is sterile and individually wrapped, so opening one size does not compromise the rest of the kit. The included lubricant, antiseptic wipes, and gloves keep placement clean without raiding another pouch.
Clinical note: Use caution with suspected midface or basilar skull fracture. An oropharyngeal airway is the alternative when the nasal route is contraindicated and the patient has no gag reflex.
Placement
- Select size by measuring nose tip to tragus of the ear
- Lubricate the airway with the water-soluble jelly provided
- Insert into the nostril — right side preferred — vertically along the floor of the nose with a slight twisting motion
- Aim toward the back of the opposite eyeball; do not force against resistance
- Confirm airway patency and continue to monitor
