Why is the TMT's 2-inch band significant compared to a 1.5-inch band?
The TMT's 2" co-poly resin acetyl band is 33% wider than the 1.5" bands on the C-A-T Gen 7 and SOF® Tourniquet. Wider tourniquet bands distribute occlusion pressure over a larger surface area, reducing the localized compression intensity on nerves and vessels under the band. This translates to lower occlusion pain for the casualty during extended application — a clinically important factor when patient movement or evacuation time is prolonged. It also reduces the risk of localized nerve injury under the tourniquet. The wider band also seats more effectively on proximal thigh wounds where a narrow band may bridge over soft tissue.
What is the TQ-RAM and how does it work with the TMT?
The TQ-RAM™ (Tourniquet-Rapid Application Module) is a purpose-built accessory by Safeguard Medical for the TMT. It is a dome-shaped point pressure device that mounts into two dedicated slots on the TMT base plate. Once secured, the TMT's windlass tension drives the dome against a wound or packed injury to maintain hands-free direct pressure — allowing the responder to move on to other interventions while the TMT and TQ-RAM maintain hemorrhage control. This makes the TMT the only CoTCCC-recommended limb tourniquet with an integrated junctional pressure accessory, extending its utility to packed wound sites and proximal injuries. The TQ-RAM weighs 0.6 oz and is sold separately.
Why does this set include a Kydex holster instead of a soft pouch?
Rigid Kydex holsters provide positive retention and a defined extraction path that soft pouches cannot. The holster's custom-molded Kydex shell holds the TMT securely without compression — protecting the windlass mechanism and plastic components from being damaged by surrounding gear — while enabling a single, consistent pull to extract the tourniquet. Malice Clips attach the holster to belts, plate carrier webbing, and MOLLE platforms without requiring additional accessories. The rigid shell also protects the TMT from UV degradation and environmental damage during storage on gear.
Can two TMTs be linked together for larger patients?
Yes. The TMT includes a quick-detach clip that allows two units to be connected end-to-end, extending the band to accommodate limb circumferences up to approximately 38" when using a single tourniquet — and beyond when linked. This linkage capability also enables the TMT to be used as a pelvic binder when two units are connected, an additional use case not available with most other windlass tourniquets. The TQ-RAM accessory also supports this configuration, with one TMT looped around the torso and the RAM seated against a junctional wound site.
