Level IV is the armour-piercing tier, defined by the .30 caliber M2 AP round — the threat NcStar names for this plate. Hard armor covers the plate footprint; handgun and fragmentation coverage across the rest of the torso comes from soft armor worn with it.

Match the plate to the pocket: this is a 10" × 12" plate and the carrier has to be cut for it. Handle ceramic with more care than steel or polyethylene — store plates flat and supported, orient the ceramic strike face outward, and build a drop-reporting rule into the armor policy. What makes Level IV protection different from Level III+?

NIJ Level IV is tested against .30 caliber M2 Armor Piercing (AP) ammunition — a 166-grain steel-core round fired at 2,880 fps. This is a dramatically harder ballistic challenge than Level III+ SRT threats (M855, 7.62×39 MSC). Defeating M2 AP requires ceramic armor materials with extreme hardness capable of fracturing a hardened steel core traveling at high velocity. Level III+ plates use ceramic or UHMWPE to stop common rifle rounds; Level IV plates must also stop purpose-built AP rounds designed to defeat armor.

Is the VISM Level IV plate NIJ certified or independently tested?

The VISM Level IV Ceramic/PE Composite Plate (B4C1012) is independently tested to meet or exceed Level IV standards — meaning it was tested at an accredited ballistics laboratory against Level IV threat criteria. It is not currently listed on the NIJ's formal Compliant Products List (CPL). For agencies or applications requiring formal NIJ certification documentation, verify with MED-TAC International whether formal NIJ listing is available for this SKU or consider NIJ-listed alternatives.

Can the VISM Level IV plate stop all rifle threats?

Yes — a plate rated to Level IV provides protection against all NIJ levels below it, including Level III (7.62×51mm NATO M80 FMJ), Level III+ SRT threats (M855, 7.62×39mm MSC), and all handgun threats. Level IV represents the highest standard NIJ protection classification. The one category not addressed by any standard NIJ level is explosive fragmentation, which requires specialized FRAG-rated armor. For typical rifle and handgun threats encountered in law enforcement and civilian contexts, Level IV provides comprehensive protection.
