What does 'single curve' mean on the VISM Curved Ballistic Side Hard Plate?

A single-curve plate is curved along one axis only — in this case, laterally across the plate's width — to match the natural inward taper of the human torso from the ribs to the waist. This allows the plate to sit flush against the side of the body rather than bridging across it like a flat plate. Single-curve is distinct from multi-curve (which curves in two axes, like front/rear chest plates) and is the standard geometry for side plates designed to contour the lateral body.

Is the curved side plate better than the flat side plate ballistically?

No — the VISM curved and flat side plates provide equivalent Level III+ ballistic protection. Both use UHMWPE construction and are independently tested against the same threat criteria. The curve is a comfort and ergonomics improvement, not a ballistic one. Curved plates distribute body contact pressure more evenly and reduce the gap between the plate and the body at the edges, which improves comfort during extended wear. The ballistic stopping capability is the same between both versions.

Will the curved VISM Side Plate fit my plate carrier's side pockets?

Curved side plates require side plate pockets with some flexibility in the pocket walls to accommodate the plate's profile. Most soft-sided side pockets on plate carriers will flex to accept a curved plate without issue. Rigid or very tight-walled side pockets may hold a flat plate better. Verify that your carrier's side pockets are listed as compatible with curved 6"×6" plates. If your carrier is designed for flat 6"×6" plates only, the curved plate may not insert smoothly or may bow the pocket outward.

How does UHMWPE compare to ceramic for side plates?

UHMWPE side plates are generally lighter and more durable under repeated impacts than ceramic equivalents. UHMWPE plates flex and absorb energy through fiber deformation rather than shattering, meaning they can sustain multiple hits without catastrophic structural failure. Ceramic side plates (like the VISM SRT Ceramic 6"×6" side plate) use a strike face ceramic layer to defeat harder rifle threats including Level III+ steel-core rounds, but the ceramic layer may fracture after a first hit. UHMWPE is preferred for applications where multi-hit durability and light weight are the priority.

Can the VISM Curved Side Plate stop M855 Green Tip ammunition?

The VISM Curved Ballistic Side Hard Plate is independently tested to Level III+ standards, which includes testing against 5.56×45mm threats. M855 (62 gr steel-core Green Tip) is a common Level III+ test threat.
