Frequently Asked Questions
What is ChitoSAM™ 100 and when should I use it?
It’s a non-woven, 100% chitosan hemostatic gauze for external control of moderate to severe bleeding. Use for wound packing (including junctional/cavity wounds) and as a hemostatic layer beneath a pressure dressing per protocol.
How long do I hold pressure after packing?
Apply firm, direct pressure for 3 minutes. Then secure with a pressure dressing while maintaining compression. If bleeding persists, add more gauze on top (do not remove the initial pack) and re-compress.
Does it work on patients who are hypothermic or on blood thinners?
Yes. Chitosan works primarily by ionic binding to blood cells/tissue, which is largely independent of the body’s normal clotting cascade—useful when clotting is impaired. Always follow your local protocols and the IFU.
Can I use it with a tourniquet or pressure bandage?
Yes. For extremity life-threatening hemorrhage, apply a tourniquet first when indicated. For junctional/deep wounds, pack with ChitoSAM™ 100, hold 3 minutes of pressure, then secure with a pressure bandage. Reassess frequently.
Is it safe for people with shellfish allergies?
Chitosan is derived from shellfish. Review allergy history and follow labeled precautions. If there’s any concern for hypersensitivity, follow your medical direction and consider alternatives per protocol.
Can I cut the gauze or use partial lengths?
Yes—use what’s required to achieve hemostasis. The Z-fold format is designed for deliberate feed into wound tracks. If additional packing is needed, add more gauze on top and reapply pressure.
How long can the dressing stay in place?
Per IFU, remove within 24 hours and obtain definitive medical care. Do not attempt to remove initial packing in the field if it risks rebleeding; add on top and continue compression until handoff.
Is the product sterile and single-use?
Yes. It is supplied sterile in a tear-anywhere pouch and is intended for single use only. Do not resterilize or reuse.
What sizes should I stock?
Carry a mix for flexibility: 3" × 4′ for routine packing, 3" × 6′ for large-volume cavities/junctional wounds, and 4" × 4" single-ply pads for surface bleeds or as a hemostatic contact layer under pressure dressings.
Storage and shelf life?
Store in original packaging, dry, and within the labeled temperature range. Observe the printed expiration date and replace if packaging is compromised or expired.
